Hong Kong Haiku

Mabel Over the years I've penned a number of haiku relating to life and events in Hong Kong, which I've collected here for your edification.

Some will only make sense if you've been to Hong Kong, while others are self-explanatory.

I hope to add to this collection from time to time, but for now, I hope you enjoy this first batch.

Bird Flu & SARS

Birds drop dead like flies
Many more a week before
Thanks again, Guangdong

H5N1 lurks
Birds die, locals panic, but
I still eat chicken

A deadly virus
But we cannot cull people
They are not chickens

City Life

O, human cockroach
I must press against the wall
Gaps are too tempting

Please Sir, quit yelling
If we can all hear your call
Your friend is now deaf

Lunar New Year

At Lunar New Year
One eats strange, alien foods
Mysterious parts

Firecrackers explode
Lion dancers grace temples
I'll sleep when I'm dead

Disneyland jam packed
Children thrown over fences
Riot at the gates

Valentine's Day view
Spending way out of control
Visa loves you all

Rainy Season

Heavy rain, hilltops
Mist tendrils hang, wispy ghosts
Fade, form, silent shift

Thunderstorms

Baneful thunderstorm
Low cloud, lightning, thunderclaps
Shake the very ground

Lightning splits the sky
Village strike, afterimage
Then the lights go out

Thunder crashes nigh
Sledgehammer shot to the heart
Nearly filled my pants

Bolt slashes nearby
Power down, pop, office glow
Computer smoking

Village Life

Yappy little dog
Barks non-stop, hours on end, so
Owners must be deaf

Inevitable
Cockroach dying, kitchen floor
Thank you, Biokill

Farmers scorch dry fields
Wish they'd warn me before I
Open the windows

Autumn approaches
Smog blows in, can't see the hills
Way to go, Shenzhen

Plastic, paper, cans
In wrong recycle bins; Lord
People are stupid
