Roofied and Robbed

In Hong Kong, Wan Chai has always been a place men could go to experience the seedier side of life.

The district has cleaned up its act (a little) over the years, but dangers still lurk in the shadows. Since the beginning of the year a number of men have visited Wan Chai for a drink, only to wake up in an alley, robbed and devoid of memory. But it isn't an urban myth, it is fact: someone drugged the men, possibly with so-called 'date-rape' drugs Rohypnol or gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and relieved them of cash and iPhones.

Men drinking alone were major targets; three were expatriates, one was a tourist. Police have no idea who may be behind the thefts, but know the men had been drinking in establishments frequented by sex workers. The men may not have been looking for company, but a solitary male invites it whether he wants it or not, creating an opportunity to have his drink spiked. It only takes 30 to 45 minutes for roofies to kick in, after which the victim is helpless.

So be warned, if you go drinking in Wan Chai all by your lonesome, keep an eye on your glass at all times. Either that or go out with friends and stick with them all night.

Better yet, stay away from Wan Chai altogether.
