Bossy Duck
Over the years I've seen some strange offerings and odd English translations on menus in Hong Kong and Macao, and Shanghai proved no different.
At Xiao Xiang Cun, a great little place near the Bund, the menu was filled with fun choices such as:
· Clap Cucumber
· Spiced Donkey
· Secret Makes the Goose Liver
· Grandmother Drunk Fish
· Pickle Claw
· Mountain City Rubber Fish
· Bossy Duck
· Sprinkle Pig Feet Skin
· Dry Pot Goose Bowel
The other interesting bit about Xiao Xiang Cun was its decorations; the place was done up to venerate Mao Zedong, and the staff wore green Red Army uniforms, complete with the cap with the little red star.
But the food we did order, a spicy beef dish, a pork hot pot and a wonderful celery dish (certainly not the rubber fish or goose bowel) was excellent and went down very well with a couple of bottles of Shanghai Suntory beer.
I never saw the bossy duck.
