An Open Letter to the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation:

Dear Idiots,

When a customer calls to double-check online banking security information because a mismatched security certificate warning is popping up in both Firefox and Safari browsers, the solution is not for your representative to immediately insist that the customer use Internet Explorer 7, especially when the customer has just informed him that we are using Macs. The solution is also not to insist that the customer try another computer using IE7, again because we only have Macs. And finally, the solution is not to insist that the web site is designed for IE7 alone (what is this, 1995?) and that the customer must use it, particularly when we've had no problems using Firefox or Safari up to and including this morning.

The correct solution is for your representatives to know what the Hell they are doing, ie. (cough) make sure the URLs are correct, that the certificate is originating from the correct source, and to confirm all the certificate information is accurate, so that the customer can be certain there is no intervening third-party somewhere on the connection that might be trying to steer the customer's browser to a false site in order to steal information.

No worries though, I figured out the problem on my own. First I cleaned all caches on the browsers and computer, then shut down. Next I powered down the broadband modem for two minutes. After reconnecting power, I restarted the Mac to establish the Internet connection, and voila, everything is back to normal; breaking the connection and resetting the IP address allowed the correct certificate to be validated.

Please educate your representatives that IE7 is not the go-to answer to cover up their colossal ineptitude.
