Fitness Fraud
In Hong Kong, fitness centres, salons and yoga studios are not to be trusted, especially if they require membership fees paid in advance.
Yet time and again stories break where a company goes belly up without warning and people having paid tens of thousands of dollars in fees get screwed. The worst of it is such companies often make a major push for new members or to increase renewals just before they close their doors, which is outright fraud. Yet no one ever gets charged.
So do yourself a favour if you plan to relocate to the Big Lychee and want a gym membership: make sure there are no fees up front and that you only pay by the month. They might charge you a higher fee per month to entice you to pay a lump sum in advance, but don't be fooled. Better to pay an extra $20 per month than losing $20,000 all at once.
You'll thank me for it.
