Shake Station

The Hong Kong Observatory is proud of its newest toy, the Po Shan Seismograph Station set nearly one-third of a kilometre inside a Mid-Levels hillside.

Inside the station, a broadband seismometer and a strong motion accelerometer can detect earthquakes thousands of kilometres away. It is a significant improvement on the existing network of eight seismographic stations, which can only detect earthquakes accurately within 200 kilometres of Hong Kong.

The idea is to act as any early warning system against earthquakes and tsunami, even though Hong Kong is at low risk of destruction from either.

Then again, I felt a tremor back in 2006 that made me wonder what would happen if a large, anomalous quake hit the Big Lychee.

Regardless, I find it quite ironic that the station was placed at Po Shan Road.
