Stone Stupid

I should be surprised, but I'm not, because the Hong Kong government lives and dies by how much concrete it can pour.

View large image You guessed it, someone thought it was a good idea to improve safety vandalise the scenery on Lamma Island by painting concrete slabs pale blue and then wedging them under large granite boulders.

Boulders that have not budged an inch in more than 100,000 years. No one lives near the huge stones, and now instead of having something interesting to view, hikers are faced with useless and unsightly cement.

The chairwoman of an island conservation group said:

The work ... reflects a lack of awareness and understanding of aesthetics among the city's engineers and contractors.

Indeed.

They would dump concrete on every natural trail in the territory if they could get away with it.
