Acid Bombs? Not Even A 2.

Hong Kong Police have arrested three men in connection with the so-called 'acid attacks' that have plagued the Big Lychee for over a year.

While some ill-informed people outside Hong Kong believe these incidents are nothing more than an urban myth, in fact they are not. Since December 2008, 10 such attacks have occurred; some idiot has thrown bottles of caustic drain cleaner from high buildings onto crowded pedestrian zones in Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po and Causeway Bay, and at housing estates in Tuen Mun and Tin Shui Wai, causing damage and injuries.

The cops suspect the same person is responsible for five of the attacks in Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei and Causeway Bay. Despite the media hype and the government hand-wringing over how this will make Hong Kong look bad and thus reduce tourism, none of the areas hit have seen a major loss of foot traffic, and it was only a matter of time before the law caught up with the perpetrator.

Now police are trying to determine which of the three actually threw the bottles and whether others are involved. The other question is why he (or they) did it, not that it matters much; it takes a lot more than a little acid to deter Hong Kongers from their beloved shopping.

Like a major bird-flu outbreak, and then maybe.
