Mormen Than Necessary
Hong Kong's imported Mormon missionaries usually prowl the streets in pairs looking to chat people up, but when I passed World Wide House in Central on Saturday afternoon I saw no fewer than eight pairs of 'elders' (mostly just pimply kids, in truth) working the Filipina domestic helpers who gather there to enjoy their day off.
I couldn't turn around without seeing guys in short-sleeved white shirts, black ties, and those little black plastic name tags. I also noticed the tendency of the missionaries to stare intently at their potential recruits; it was rather creepy. It had the air of a hardcore push to raid what was in all likelihood a predominantly Catholic group (about 80% of Filipinos are Catholics) to convert individuals to Joe Smith's House of Rules and Regulations.
While I am an open-minded guy (people can follow whatever religion they wish, or none at all) I find proselytising distasteful, no matter what religious group is behind it.
It was all I could do not to jump in and yell: "Run!"
