Tram Slam
Hong Kong's island trams are a reliable and safe way to get from point A to B, except for rare instances when a pedestrian is run over, or in extraordinary cases, when two trams collide head on.
Trams don't go very fast from a standstill, but they can move quickly enough that passengers get hurt should they come to a sudden stop, which is what happened at the junction of Hennessy Road and Percival Street in Causeway Bay. It turns out that one of the drivers jumped a red light (a highly unusual error), causing his westbound tram to ram into one turning south.
Ironically, the westbound tram was emblazoned with an advertisement for road safety; how embarrassing. In all 41 people were injured, mostly from falling or banging their heads. It just goes to show that one should never be complacent around trams, for as safe as they are, things can still go wrong.
The good news is they hardly ever do, which says lot for the folks who provide a great service for Hong Kongers and visitors alike, day in and day out.
