Crying Fish

If you haven't seen it by now, I direct your attention to a video which shows a Chinese dish called 呼叫魚, loosely translated as "shouting fish" or "crying fish" (as in crying out, not weeping).

Before you look, you should know that although the Chinese prize freshness in their cuisine, this takes things way too far: how else would you explain taking a live fish, wrapping its head in a wet towel, and then dangling it into frying oil so that the body is cooked while the fish is still alive? Once on the plate, the fish head is still moving. Whether it's just a reflex or the fish is still alive I'm uncertain (I'm leaning toward still living), the cooking process is what galls me.

In the video the laughing participants are from Hong Kong; the loudest woman keeps repeating that it's scary. And because it's YouTube, do yourself a favor and disable the comments if you value your intellect.

Because the truth is that there aren't many Hong Kongers who would find this level of animal cruelty appetising.
