Triad Tally

Over the years I've written a fair amount about Hong Kong triad activity but haven't outlined the gangs as much.

According to recent court testimony of a senior anti-triad officer, Hong Kong's major triad gangs are summed up as follows:

· Wo Hop To: active in Western District, Wan Chai, Aberdeen, Yuen Long. Interests include loan sharking and gambling.

· Wo Shing Wo: active in Kowloon West. Interests include underground casinos, vice, drug trafficking, extortion and piracy.

· Sun Yee On: active in Tsim Sha Tsui. Interests include dangerous drugs, piracy and extortion.

· 14K: interests include extortion, prostitution, piracy and illegal franchising of taxi stops.

If you purchase pirated software, copy watches or replica handbags in Hong Kong, you are likely supporting a triad society. If you come to the city to experience the seamier side of life, your money most often ends up in triad hands. If you're foolish enough to borrow money from a loan shark, you can bet a triad thug will come around to collect.

Mostly the triads will ignore you, because if there is no money to be made, they won't waste their time. If anything the groups are more interested in harming each other so that they can horn in on money-making enterprises.

If you don't give them a reason to come after you with choppers, they simply won't.
