Paper-Thin Pretence

Let's talk about paper for a moment.

I'm all for reducing, reusing and recycling paper; it just makes sense not to knock down trees when we don't need to. I'm also for corporate initiatives that cut the use of paper; it's the responsible thing to do.

But I dislike when companies, especially Hong Kong's banks, latch onto environmental causes to make themselves look good when in truth they're doing so purely for self-interest, that interest of course being increased profitability. Don't insult my intelligence with the facade of altruism.

And who do they think they're fooling anyway? It's also an obvious attempt to get my e-mail address so they can start spamming me with credit card offers, much as they do now by filling up my mailbox with unwanted promotions. And when, not if, they do put me on an e-mail list, opting out isn't easy or simple; more often than not I have to visit a branch and fill out a form.

On paper.
