The Umbrella Wipers
In a bid to rid the world of evil plastic bags, some Hong Kong shopping malls are doing away with umbrella condoms plastic sheaths that prevent water from draining onto the floor.
Instead they will have wipers standing by to towel off umbrellas. This in response to yet another green group study that estimated some 18 million umbrella bags were deployed during the rainy season.
Staff can wipe the umbrellas dry in five to seven seconds. Cleaning staff responsible for the job had received training on how to wipe umbrellas dry swiftly.
Why didn't they just switch to biodegradable bags? Because they cost more, while converting the existing crew doesn't increase expenses. I doubt the cleaners are getting a raise to go along with that special training.
Reminds me of Edward the Longshanks in Braveheart: "Arrows cost money. Use up the Irish. The dead cost nothing."
