I Got My Wish
Having viewed the grotesque, temporary Disneyesque plastic Wishing Tree erected at Fong Ma Po village for this year's Lunar New Year festivities, I'm happy to report that a new artificial tree is slated to be installed in time for the incoming Year of the Tiger.
The replacement tree will be roughly seven metres high, and someone must have heard me griping about the cheesy molded plastic of the temporary tree, because the new one is designed to look like a real tree.
Best of all, it will be able to withstand the custom of throwing wishes into the branches, a practice banned since 2005 when the original Wishing Tree felt so abused it decided to drop a heavy limb onto two celebrants. That old tree is still alive and hanging in there now that heavy oranges on strings are no longer slashing its bark open.
The only thing that remains to be seen is whether they'll continue throwing fake oranges, an idea I support since using real oranges is an unconscionable waste of food.
If the tree god can adapt to an artificial home, then it shouldn't have a problem with artificial fruit.
