Die by the Sword

Oh sure, the moment I say that few people in Hong Kong are killed with knives, a Red Pole with the Sun Yee On triad gets whacked outside the Kowloon Shangri-La hotel at 4.00am.

Lee Tai-lung was ambushed by at least five men the moment he stepped from his Mercedes-Benz. First they ran into him with one of the two vehicles they were driving, and then they hopped out to chop his arms. Police later found the two cars on fire in the New Territories, the typical method of disposal for stolen vehicles used in crimes.

Lee was a well-known gangster with a history of grandstanding:

Active in Tsim Sha Tsui, he even staged a show of force at the district's police station ... bringing 64 supporters when he reported to police as part of his bail conditions on an assault charge.

Later in the evening about 40 men held a ritual ceremony outside the hotel, calling out "Come back dai lo [big brother]." Even dead he managed to cause a scene.

It almost seems apt that he'd go out in an attack that was far more brazen than usual.
