Hack Attacks
It's not every day in Hong Kong that triad gang battles occur, but most times when they do just the pipes and bottles come out.
When the knives and choppers appear, however, someone usually ends up in the hospital.
Or dead.
Such was the fate of a Wo Shing Wo gangster at the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market. While working as a porter along with a fellow gang member, at least six 14K triad members set upon them late in the evening. By the time the cops arrived, the porter was dead and the other man was wounded. Six blood-soaked beef knives had been cast aside.
And the reason for the hack attack? Police believe it was the result of 'a long-standing dispute over a work-related problem', meaning the 14K guys made sure that no one would muscle in on their action, which in this case was mundane: moving goods about the market.
In an unrelated incident, an office-bearer of a Sun Yee On triad society and a follower were also chopped, but by about 10 young men from a separate Sun Yee On offshoot. The Red Pole ended up in critical condition while his follower had minor wounds. It seems the two societies had a little disagreement about drug profits; police think the attack was a warning rather than an out-and-out hit. Either way I don't care, given the gangs enjoy selling dope to kids.
Thanks to the blood-letting frontline cops and OCTB officers must step up their game against the possibility of revenge attacks, not that your average Hong Konger is likely to witness any.
These things typically happen while the rest of us are sleeping.
