Because That's Truly Scary

If you want an example of Hong Kong's dumbest reaction to viruses such as bird and swine flu, look no further than elevator and ATM buttons, both of which are covered with plastic and, of course, proudly bear a sign that informs the citizenry of the number of hours between dutiful cleanings.

I can't begin to stress how stupid this is. First, no one cares, and second, the instant someone who's been picking his nose moments before touches the keypad the surface is compromised, rendering the clockwork cleanings useless. Busy elevators and bank machines will never be clean.

Instead of paying someone to perform feel-good tasks, why not have them do actual work, such as, say, scouring the perpetually filthy men's washroom in the MTR's East Tsim Sha Tsui station?
