Emergency! Don't Panic!

The first person in Hong Kong to be confirmed as infected with H1N1 turns out to be a Mexican who arrived from Shanghai.

To some folks in these parts it means the apocalypse has been loosed and we're all going to die. It doesn't help that our illustrious bow-tied leader fed the media a mixed message in practically the same breath on Labour Day:

I will raise the alert level from serious to emergency.

I stress we don't need to panic.

But panic people will, especially given the inauspicious timing: Buddha's birthday is the very next day. Perhaps to soothe Hong Kongers the monks at Ngong Ping monastery will wipe down the Tian Tan Buddha with disinfectant during his annual bath.

I doubt they'll fit him with a gigantic N95 particle mask.
