Pop quiz: if you're a parent, do you take steps to protect your child whenever possible, at least until the kid understands the concept of self-preservation?
It's not a trick question.
What would you do if your baby was wont to stick his fingers in the electrical sockets? Or climb the furniture? Or play on the staircase? Would you leave a toddler at home alone?
And if your little boy is prone to sleepwalking (when self-preservation doesn't apply), would you not bar the windows? Because if you live in Hong Kong and you don't secure the flat, there's a chance the kid could somnambulate right out the second-storey window, like the 8-year-old boy who's now in critical condition.
Let's hope he survives and comes back fully healed.
And let's hope the parents get a second chance to install those security grilles.
