Star Ferry Still Cheap

It took almost one year, but the government has approved a request by the Star Ferry for a rate increase to offset losses incurred by the drop in patronage, a drop caused by the government when it destroyed the old Star Ferry pier and shifted it to a much less desirable location so that it could build a road no one wants.

The approval is the least it could do.

The two-phase fare increase is certainly not going to hurt passengers:

From March 29, the company will raise all weekday fares by 10 cents and increase weekend fares by 20 to 30 cents. From January 1, 2010, the weekday full fare will go up by a further 10 to 20 cents and the weekend fare by a further 30 to 50 cents.

I wouldn't care if the fare went up even more than that; the Star Ferry is a vital part of Hong Kong and in no way should it be allowed to decline into failure. It's a cheap and pleasurable way to cross the harbour; so much more agreeable than taking a bus or train through a tunnel.

So whether you live in Hong Kong or plan to visit, why not take a few extra minutes and give the Star Ferry your business?
