Typhoon Nuri
With Typhoon Nuri set to make a direct hit on Hong Kong, the Observatory has issued the Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9.
The last time we had a No. 9 signal was in 2003, and this item in the precautionary announcements reminded me of Typhoon York in 1999:
If the eye of the typhoon passes directly over Hong Kong, there may be a temporary lull lasting from a few minutes to several hours. This will be followed by a sudden resumption of violent winds from a different direction. Remain where you are if protected and be prepared for destructive winds and the change in wind directions.
The difference between riding out a typhoon in a village house and being in a high-rise is the village house doesn't sway.
