I'm preparing for a massive dose of reverse culture shock.
I haven't visited Canada since 2002, and my upcoming trip is bound not only to remind me of the glaring differences in the way of life between Hong Kong and my old hometown, but highlight new ones, although I'm certain the minivans disguised as shopping carts in grocery stores will be the least disconcerting.
It's going to be weird not to have to speak Cantonese or see Chinese signs everywhere. It's going to feel odd not to be surrounded by a sea of black hair. It's not going to feel right to jump in the car when I'm so used to walking everywhere. The lack of crowds and all that open space is probably going to freak me out.
And no, I'm not going to get homesick and drop by Edmonton's Chinatown, and the last thing I'll want to eat is Chinese food, so don't ask.
