Sticks and Stones
Many times English translations on Hong Kong signs are so mangled they're hilarious.
But sometimes they imply that foreigners are idiots.
How else would you explain this sign at the Railway Museum in Tai Po?
The Chinese text simply reads: please don't throw rocks.
Direct. To the point. The intent is to ensure parents keep their kids under control, which is reasonable.
Yet the English text suggests that we barbarians need to be reminded of the peril involved; and it's a good thing, too, because I had been seriously tempted to fling gravel every which way.
You know, just for the heck of it.
