Dimdums

Overall, Hong Kong's "green groups" are to be applauded for raising awareness of environmental issues, but their biggest weakness is their fondness for exercises in futility.

Consider "Dim it!", an initiative urging people to turn off lights and appliances for one hour on the evening of June 21.

It is scheduled on the summer solstice because more energy is consumed after that day of the year as the weather will be hotter ...

How can they expect to be taken seriously when they advocate such nonsense? If the power bill doesn't motivate people to cut back on electricity consumption, then this action won't sway them.

Environmental groups ought to promote power-saving devices such as the cooling fan we just purchased (Origo Tower Air Cooler; Model DF-21A), which uses water, reusable ice packs and just 45W to circulate cool air; during summer we'll use it instead of the air conditioner while we sleep. We expect the investment to pay for itself in just one month, and go on to make a significant dent in our usual summer power bills.

That's a minimum of seven months of slashed power use versus a pointless one-hour stunt.

The word dim is better applied to the folks who came up with such hot air.
