Cultural Wasteland

Shek O village artist Ray Yip has learned that spontaneous conversion of an ugly buttress wall into abstract art is an exercise in futility.

View large image Why? Because some pinhead complained to the Highways Department, which in turn labelled the work illegal graffiti and subsequently slopped grey paint over it.

Yes, Yip should have sought permission first, but that doesn't address the mindless destruction of a mural that had beautified an otherwise drab scene. Instead of gaining inspiration and arranging for the painting to stay in place, government automatons obliterated it. After all, blank cement and shotcrete is always preferable to vibrant, colourful art.

No wonder some folks consider Hong Kong to be a cultural wasteland.
