I AM Sick to My Stomach

Hong Kong and plastic bags: the two go together like white on rice.

But ever since environmental groups began making noise about too many plastic bags the dynamic has changed. While I'm all for reduced landfills and recycling of basic materials, I can't stand the nauseating corporate response to the issue: slap slogans on everything. Treating consumers as though they were in kindergarten is condescending at best.

View large image It started with the near-riot over limited stocks of designer Anya Hindmarch's shopping tote emblazoned with the slogan "I'm NOT A Plastic bag".

Not to be one-upped, grocery chain PARKnSHOP turned the tables with a new bag printed with the statement: I AM a Plastic Bag, use me responsibly!, which also included a three-point checklist of bag features: I am reusable, I am recyclable, I am biodegradable. Then Pacific Coffee jumped on the bandwagon with paper serviettes that read: I am an environmentally friendly napkin.

Excuse me while I barf.

Preferably in a biodegradable plastic bag, with environmentally friendly napkins to wipe up any spillage.

According to corporate logic, all I need to complete the job is to affix a label that reads: I AM a Sack of Vomit, dispose of me responsibly!
