Adding 1 Is Just Too Hard
Hong Kong's bureaucrats never cease to amaze me.
In response to the $1 increase in the taxi flag fall rate, the Transport Department created a "fare conversion table" to be hung in each taxi until its meter could be updated. The table, a two-sided laminated A4 page replete with tiny print, details every possible final fare well into the $500 range, from the old total to the new.
Which is simply one dollar more.
Instead of producing a plain sign stating passengers should add a buck to the total fare, someone decided it would be a great idea to waste several man hours, reams of paper and loads of plastic on a temporary condition.
Either they think all non civil servants are idiots, or they're attempting to justify their bloated salaries.
