Must Be Poor
An new record in spending stupidity has been reached, with an outlay at auction of HK$16.5 million (about US$2.1 million) for a license plate bearing the number 18.
The previous record was HK$13 million.
The winner, an electronics businessman named Cheung, said:
I do not mind spending more money on something I like.
He thought the plate would be a "good companion" for his other one, which reads "XX 18". To superstitious Hong Kongers, 18 is auspicious because it sounds like the Cantonese term "must get rich".
It occurs to me that if he's rich enough to waste millions on a frivolity, he doesn't need a charm to amass more wealth.
On the other hand, maybe now he does.
