Farewell, Fei Fei
Hong Kong has lost another favourite star; Lydia "Fei Fei" Shum Tin-ha (沈殿霞) has passed away at the age of 62.
Fei Fei translates as fat fat in English, but it simply means fatty: for Hong Kongers it was a term of endearment. Famous for her trademark wig and from-the-belly cackle, she was larger than life. She was also known as 'Happy Nut'.
Shum acted in more than 100 Hong Kong films, recorded six albums, hosted more than 5,000 television variety shows and held a 40th Anniversary concert (for her own career) in Hong Kong Coliseum.
Shum was born July 21, 1945 in Shanghai. She made her film debut in 1960 with the Shaw Brothers. She became well-known in widely televised TVB variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight, first singing with the female group Four Golden Flowers in the 1970s.
Shum subsequently established herself as predominantly a comic and dramatic actress, appearing regularly in films over the past 40 years. These included The Lotus Lamp 1965, Three Women in a Factory 1967, The Country Bumpkin in Style 1974 and more recently In-Laws, Out-Laws 2004 and Where Are They Now? 2006, among others.
Plagued with numerous health problems including cancer, Shum was in and out of hospital since 2002.
The Big Lychee will be a sadder place without her.
