A Dozen Is How Much?
While not the cheapest mode of transport, Hong Kong taxis have never been considered expensive.
But soon the flagfall rate will increase by $1 to offset rising operating costs. I'm surprised it took this long; for the last 10 years the entry fare has been fixed at HK$15 (about US$1.90) for urban cabs and HK$12.50 (about US$1.60) for New Territories cabs. Even with the hike Hong Kong taxis will still be cheaper than those in New York, where the minimum fare is US$2.50 (about HK$19.50).
Regardless, some folks will pen whiny letters to the editor decrying the bump, because this wouldn't be Hong Kong if they didn't.
But it's a matter of perspective; if they want something to gripe about they ought to look at the price of eggs.
