A Crappy Trade
Try as I might to understand the mindset of some Hong Kongers when it comes to dealing with problems, I still haven't been able to figure out the logic process.
When a man with huge gambling debts was confronted at his flat by two "debt collectors", he first called the police, who showed up to question the pair.
So far so good.
But then, while the cops were distracted, the man opened a window and jumped out.
From the 40th floor.
In front his wife.
The police then busted the shakedown peons for allegedly "aiding and abetting money lending at excessive interest rates", because there seems to be no law against harassing someone until they off themselves.
So committing suicide not only erased his debt (and further traumatised his wife), it convinced the officers to arrest the two lowly players in the loansharking game. I'm sure the thugs all torn up inside about it, too.
But in the end he's still strawberry jam. That's a crappy trade in anyone's book; then again, we're talking about a degenerate gambler: someone used to making crappy trades. In his mind, it was just another bet in a long line of risky wagers.
Except this time it had a small payoff, although I'm sure his wife would disagree it was worth it.
