Big Island; Big Food
While in Hawaiʻi we stopped by Safeway to pick up food for the week.
I looked for a cart but couldn't see any inside, so I stepped out to locate the cart corral. There I found mammoth carts at least twice the size of the ones I'm used to.
And it didn't take long to realise why they were so huge; after years away from North America I'd forgotten how big the food was: I couldn't find a juice carton small enough to fit into the fridge, and even the bananas looked like they were on steroids.
Nothing serious; just a little reverse culture shock.
Another problem was the ingredients of the packaged food. We had to weed out all the products containing sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated or partially-hydrogenated oils. I handled at least half a dozen loaves of bread before finding one free of all that garbage. That's not to say those ingredients can't be found in Hong Kong, it's just that here there's so much less of it here.
In the end we returned home without any extra pounds, but the oversized grub and the scary content labels were a reminder that although we love to travel, clean eating is always going to be a challenge.
