Good Fences

One of the joys of living in a village house surrounded by a nice high wall is getting to ignore solicitors.

If our doorbell rings during the day and we're not expecting anyone, I'll go outside to investigate; it could be the mail carrier, a fellow making a gas delivery, or someone needing to read the water meter.

But when our bell rings after dark and I open the inner door only to hear the doorbells of both upstairs neighbours ringing as well, I step back inside and go about my business, because I know without a doubt that someone from a cable company will be standing at the gate in a vain attempt to promote channels we don't need.

We never watch TV, and I'm not about to waste my life explaining why not to some disbelieving twit who thinks that because I'm a foreigner I need (not want, nay, need) every available channel relating to golf, soccer, rugby and cricket. Cricket, for the love of Jebus!

And since I can guarantee they're not standing outside the gate with an NHL channel offer, there's no reason whatsoever for me to bother checking.

So yes, it's true: good fences make good neighbours defences.
