Bursting Bun Festival
After experiencing the Cheung Chau Bun Festival, I can say without reservation that it's no place to go if you're an agoraphobe, claustrophobe, sinophobe or xenophobe.
Because more than 20,000 people tried to pour themselves into the island's narrow village lanes to see the parade of floating children, lion and dragon dances, and to visit the temples and Cantonese opera shows; all under a scorching sun and in 32C heat.
To say the police were overwhelmed in controlling foot traffic would be a gross understatement.
The best way to get the most from the festival would be to book an island apartment a day before the event, map out a good viewing position in advance and then camp there hours before the parade so as not to be overrun by the massive crowd.
And if you suffer from any of the above-mentioned irrational fears, you'd be better off staying home.
