Scattering at Sea
Urn space is in such short supply in Hong Kong, the government now allows people to scatter the ashes of their loved ones at sea, but only at four designated locations: the West Lamma Channel, and the waters off Tung Lung Chau, Tap Mun, and The Brothers islands.
The idea is to be far from the territory's beaches and fish farms, so that one's dead relatives aren't rolling up on the sand or ending up on a dinner table somewhere.
Fair enough, but given the average weight of cremains is less than 2.5 kg, isn't the government underestimating the ocean's ability to disperse such a small amount? If the ocean can recycle an entire body, it can handle a little powder.
Therefore, locations closer to shore should be acceptable. Taking people to open water might be risky if they're prone to seasickness.
What if someone scatters their breakfast in the sea after the ashes have gone in?
