Free Fools
If you ever wanted proof that Hong Kongers will queue for anything, look no further than the grand opening of the new H&M fashion outlet in Central.
After an announcement that the first 20 people to enter would get a free trench coat signed by Madonna, and that the following 500 people would receive free sunglasses that she designed, a huge turnout was guaranteed.
People began lining up 24 hours prior to the opening. Not counting the Madonna fanboy who was first in line, more than 1,000 people ended up in the queue.
Lai Chung-kan ... was not surprised when he turned up at 6am to find close to 500 people at the store's entrance.
"Hong Kong people love free things," he said. "That's why I'm here, to get the free glasses. I don't even like them."
Now that's just stupid. Why go through all that hassle for something you don't even want?
Heck, I should camp out at Central's busiest pedestrian zone and hand out free noogies.
Mr Lai said he was buying a few items but generally he wasn't impressed with the quality. "I really don't know what the fuss is about. It's all made in China," he said.
Waiting in line for five hours for a free item you don't like may be dumb, but spending money on goods you don't think are all that great is moronic. That noogie idea is sounding better all the time.
I hope that guy is first in line.
