Withering Wishing Tree

According to tree doctor Jim Chi-yung, a geography professor at the University of Hong Kong, the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree is going to die within five to 10 years.

I pass by it every day, and though it looks greener, the century-old tree is being propped up and no new growth is happening.

Banning the custom of chucking oranges onto the tree's branches hasn't helped as was hoped. Perhaps visitors should begin wishing the tree will survive.

Given their beauty, the city ought to plant new banyan trees everywhere to replace this and all the others that have been thoughtlessly destroyed over the years.
