The Hong Kong Monetary Authority will release polymer substrate $10 banknotes to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the handover in 2007.

Polymer notes are cleaner, more hygienic, more secure and will last four times longer than paper bills. They can even be recycled at the end of their useful life.

Plastic money has been in use in Australia since 1992, with other countries following suit, such as New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore.

It's a good idea all around, save for two problems: the bills will be sticky when the humidity is high, and plastic money is hard to fold.

That's going to drive people insane when they're trying to fill lai see during Lunar New Year.
