Harbour Tramline
Hongkong Tramways has come up with a great idea: it wants to build a new tramline along the waterfront from Sheung Wan to Wan Chai.
The downside: it would have to make use of area being reclaimed from Victoria Harbour for the Central Bypass road.
The idea is being floated as a "tourist loop", with trams running from Western Market toward the new Star Ferry pier and continuing to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Since at this point the government is Hell-bent on reclaiming the harbour for its precious bypass, it only seems fitting to co-opt the space for greener transport. Then again, tourists will only use the loop if the view is unobstructed, which means Hongkong Tramways will have to lean on the government to do something about the smog first. That will be tough to do, considering the bypass will contribute to the smog, which proves the government just doesn't give a rip.
However, if Hongkong Tramways could get a guarantee that no further reclamation or construction will take place beyond the intended new line, it would be worth the effort as it would protect the harbour from further damage.
And it would make a nice addition to venerable Hong Kong institution.
