Blunt Force Trauma

I was once asked if Hong Kongers are inured to cruelty.

My reply was that I didn't know, but considering the hardships which many people endured during the formation of Hong Kong, I didn't find it inconceivable that some folks would treat acts of cruelty as an unavoidable fact of life.

And then cases like this make the news.

The Standard reports:

A pet shop owner was jailed for seven years ... for beating her male assistant repeatedly over a four-year period, using a variety of improvised weapons, leaving him with physical and psychological scars.

The court heard that, initially, the attacks began with slaps on the hand shortly after Shek was hired to work at the shop. But the attacks quickly grew into kicks and slaps on the face, allegedly for failing to make sales, staring at female customers and leaving bird cages dirty. As the attacks intensified, Chan began using teacups, screwdrivers, mop handles, wooden chairs, metal rods and other "heavy instruments."

The judge called the beatings "systematic torture".

I don't know about you, but if an employer ever struck me, he'd be drinking his meals through a straw for a long time afterward.
