Escalator Educator
A while ago I wrote a piece titled Escalator Etiquette.
In it I reminded users of the hazards of not using the hand rail.
Several times since then I've caught my wife on the escalator with one hand carrying a bag and the other holding her mobile phone to her ear. Because I don't want to see her get hurt should the machinery come to a sudden halt, I've advised her to make calls later so that her hand is free to use the rail.
Think I'm being too cautious?
Tell that to the five elderly women who lost their balance and fell when a department store escalator stopped with an abrupt jerk. Four of them went to the hospital to have injured limbs treated.
Lucky for them they were headed up. Had it been the other way around they might have had their heads cracked open or their necks broken.
Remember, with escalators it's not a question of if they'll halt, but when.
