Awesome When Free
More than once I've had e-mail from bands requesting permission to use one of my awesome photographs [their words, not mine - ed.], for album art, to make t-shirts, what have you.
I've had similar requests from book authors.
It's flattering, yet I'm never surprised when they say they don't want to pay but will give me credit. That's sweet, but credit doesn't pay the bills.
And as soon as I offer them a reasonable licensing fee (good photographs take time, effort and money to create), they vapourise into thin air.
Isn't it interesting that they want to use my work to help them make money, but at the same time aren't willing to part with even a small amount?
It's gotten to the point where I feel my first question should be: are you planning to give away your work for free?
