In the movies, car chases are drawn-out affairs, often including an exchange of gunfire.

In Hong Kong, most of the time the bad guys can't shoot back and thus don't get far.

View large image Police were sent to the junction of Portland Street and Mongkok Road at 4.30am after a fight broke out between two gangs, but the brawlers fled before police arrived.

An hour later ... a passer-by called police after spotting the staves in the opened boot of a BMW while the driver was changing a tyre at a petrol station. When police arrived, the vehicle took off.

The BMW jumped two red lights ... before police caught up with it ...

The 19-year-old driver jumped out and fled but was caught after a brief chase.

Officers arrested four other men in the car ... Four staves were found in the boot.

The pursuit went a total of 500 metres.

Even if the perps had kept the staves in the cabin instead of the trunk, it would have been hard to prolong the chase by hurling them out the window.
