Fan of Fans
Hong Kong is home to many secret delights, hidden away and begging to be discovered.
The fan museum is one of these.
From The Standard:
A short walk from the more touted and much larger Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence in Shau Kei Wan, history blows a smaller, cooler breeze in one man's homegrown fan museum.
Next to a tiny temple in A Kung Ngam Village off Tung Wong Road, sits Henry Chung Hon-ping's 180-square-foot homage to the simple fan. Two hundred fans, in fact, dating from about 1900 to 1954, in polished brass, buffed cast iron, even a rare white copper kerosene-powered Dutch model from 1910 with blades that resemble a small windmill.
And that's only about half of Chung's collection. Another 200 or so are in storage awaiting restoration and more display space, he said. Admission is free but if you just drop by, you're liable to see a closed door as the museum is only open by appointment by calling the number listed on the door.
