Peacock Peculiarity

What's the difference between Hong Kong and mainland China?

Answer: response to H5N1 avian influenza.

Though Hong Kong has had no cases of human infection, aviaries, waterfowl enclosures and the Mai Po Nature Reserve have all been closed to public access. It's safety overkill, but the government is following the better-safe-than-sorry route.

But just across the border, in Shenzhen, my wife and I sat down for lunch, only to find a peacock strutting between tables inside the restaurant.

And that's how simple it is.
