Ye Olde Gaol

Ye Olde Victoria Gaol is set to close for good.

The prison has been around since 1841 and was so durable it withstood numerous bombing raids during WWII, well enough that it was repaired and reopened in 1946.

Earlier reports that the prison was to become a tourist destination have met with controversy, as Hong Kong developers don't have the best track record when it comes to preserving historical colonial architecture. Were Victoria Prison not a declared monument and thus protected, you can bet it'd be knocked down and replaced with yet another luxury residential high-rise.

You can imagine the prices developers could command for flats on Old Bailey Street.
