Witless Wishing
The first Lunar New Year fair adjacent to the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree will proceed, despite that the tree hasn't recovered from decades of abuse.
Tree expert Jim Chi-yung says the tree is like a "structurally unsafe building":
It has never got well. The wood decay continues to spread. Fungus is also penetrating its trunk and branches. There is little we can do now, except rely on the tree's own self-recovery power.
The reckless disregard [photo] for nature continues, despite a nearby wall [photo] constructed for superstitious visitors to hang wishes.
It doesn't even matter if the famous tree dies; another hapless tree [photo] awaits maltreatment down the road.
With vendors willing to hawk oranges tied to wish papers, people with less common sense will have plenty of ammunition at hand to destroy nature's beauty.
