Follow the Lady

Hong Kong's housewives and domestic helpers can breathe easier now that the police have taken down a triad-run three-card monte scam.

The syndicate used females as shills to suck in greedy early-morning shoppers at outdoor markets. By posting sentries at key points in the district, the gang could disappear into the market crowd when the cops arrived. It took police a year of surveillance to identify the perps and coordinate the sting.

The con raked in about HK$14.6 million (US$1.87 million), not bad considering the overhead: a cardboard box and four cards.

Trust the triads to take a small-time grift and turn it into a cash cow.
