English Attack

Every now and then certain people feel compelled to go out of their way to address me in English.

I'm not talking about service personnel in shops and restaurants; I'm referring to people who have no reason to talk to me but do anyway, like the little guy who cleans the public washroom in Sha Tin's Grand Central Plaza.

A rule exists somewhere about not talking to other guys in the john; that's why most of the time cleaners go about their business and ignore the men using the facilities. But this guy waited until I washed my hands, whereupon he rushed around the corner and said "Good morning!"

I wouldn't have minded whatsoever if he'd greeted me when I'd entered, but he talked to no one else and ambushed me at the sink ... and he's done this the last two times I've been there. Maybe that's the only English he knows and he's proud to use it (he's never uttered another word in addition to his exuberant salutation).

I don't know why, but it weirds me out.
